Let us inform you that the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights (the EU Observatory), which is acting at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) published a new edition of “The Observatory Newsletter” (July, 2017).

The cover story of this issue brings the news on a two-day International IP Enforcement Summit held in July 2017 in Berlin, attended by policy makers, enforcement officials, members of civil society and private sector representatives. The Executive Director of EUIPO, Mr. António Campinos, in his speech, reminded delegates of the ever more significant problem of the global trade in counterfeiting and piracy, pointing out that in the digital age there are new opportunities for creators and innovators, but also for counterfeiters. Nevertheless, it is emphasised that the digital environment offers the new opportunities to fight IP infringements (like new blockchain technology). The representatives of consumers, rights holders and users of the IP system had also the opportunity to share their views during discussions. The Summit was highly successful and presented via social media.

During the Summit in Berlin, EUIPO published the study titled “Mapping the Real Route of Trade in Fake Goods” jointly prepared by EUIPO and the OECD and the report titled “2017 Situation Report on Counterfeiting and Piracy in the European Union” as a result of a joint project by EUIPO and EUROPOL, reported to the interested public here online as well.

Also, the news was published on a two-day youth event held in June 2017 within the EUIPO’s campaign Ideas Powered aimed at building awareness of important concepts of intellectual property with this age group, giving an overview of other professional-educational activities held in the past period and there were other topics presented in relation to IP enforcement.
