Research results have been published on negative effects of counterfeiting in the sector of manufacture of jewellery and watches, handbags and luggage The European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights at OHIM (hereinafter: the EU Observatory) has published the fifth and the sixth economic studies in a row dealing with the impact of problem of counterfeiting products in individual industry sectors in the European Union, originally titled: “The economic cost of IPR infringement in jewellery and watches” and “The economic cost of IPR infringement in handbags and luggage”. The published studies cover products like jewellery, jewellery imitations (fashion jewellery) and watches and handbags and luggage. The studies give statistical data on losses in these industry sectors due to the sale of counterfeits. The losses in the manufacturing sector of jewellery and watches amount to 13.5% of total consumption on a yearly basis in the European Union, which accounts for 1.9 billion euros of revenue lost, whereas the losses in the manufacturing sector of handbags and luggage account for 12.7% i.e. 1.6 billion euros of revenue lost. The sales lost consequently cause 15 000 jobs lost in the jewellery and watches sector and 12 100 jobs in the handbags and luggage sector in the European Union. Counterfeiting of products included in these studies mostly affects Italy. The studies consider also indirect negative effects of counterfeiting in the mentioned sectors on other economy sectors as well as the impact of these problems on public finances. The studies include a detailed outline of the methodology used in research work. The studies are available at the following links: “The economic cost of IPR infringement in jewellery and watches“ and “The economic cost of IPR infringement in handbags and luggage“ Datum novosti: 12/02/2016 Print E-mail Close Your name: To e-mail address: Additional Message:
