“Innovation for a Better Life” - Prize Competition for Primary and Secondary School Children

The State Intellectual Property Office and the Coordination for the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights of the Republic of Croatia in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization invite PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL CHILDREN to participate in a PRIZE COMPETITION for the best literary work, video work, composition, fine art work or cartoon on the theme of: “Innovation for a Better Life”.
The competition is intended to encourage school children to express their view through a written / animated / visual / musical expression about how creative works and innovations can improve and enhance people’s lives and the entire society and why it is important to respect the work of creative authors and innovators and their intellectual property rights.

Rules of the Competition
All primary and secondary school children from the Republic of Croatia can enter the prize competition for the best literary work, video work, composition, fine art work or cartoon on the theme of: “Innovation for a Better Life”.

The competition shall be carried out in three categories:
1.    Works by primary school children in class 1 to 4
2.    Works by primary school children in class 5 to 8
3.    Works by secondary school children.

Literary works submitted for this competition can contain no more than three (3) standard pages (one standard page measures 1800 keystrokes), video works and compositions can last no more than two (2) minutes, a fine art work cannot exceed A3 format, and a cartoon can contain no more than two (2) pages.

The works applied for the competition cannot use the contents protected by copyright and other intellectual property rights of other persons without their consent.   

School children can enter the competition individually or in groups of maximum three members. One school child or one group of school children can register one work only for the competition. The school child to register an individual work can participate in the production of one work in a group.

Every work applied for the competition needs to contain data on the school child/ren (name, surname, class, school name) and the mentor (name and surname and contact data).

The competition is open for works to be submitted from 26 April until 30 November 2017 inclusive.

The decision on the prize award shall be published until 31 December 2017 on web sites of the State Intellectual Property Office and the Coordination Board for the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights (www.dziv.hr/en and www.stop-krivotvorinama-i-piratstvu.hr/en).
Evaluation Criteria
The competition is intended to encourage school children to express their view through a written / animated / visual / musical expression about how creative works and innovations can improve and enhance people’s lives and the entire society and why it is important to respect the work of creative authors and innovators and their intellectual property rights.
The works shall be evaluated by the assessment committee established by the State Intellectual Property Office.

The works shall be evaluated according to the following criteria:
  • adequate treatment of the theme given,
  • creativity.
Awards
Three finalists shall be selected in each category, who will be adequately awarded with a present by the World Intellectual Property Organization and the State Intellectual Property Office, and the author/s of the winning entry in each category will receive a certificate from the World Intellectual Property Organization.

The overall national winning entry of all the winning entries in each category shall be selected and its author/s awarded with a tablet and a smartphone speaker (one grand prize regardless of the work registered individually or by a group), and their school shall be awarded with a trophy by the World Intellectual Property Organization. The best works in each category shall be exhibited within the Intellectual Property Day event for children and youth to be organized by organizers of this competition, with a possibility of exhibiting on appropriate events organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva.
Application Procedure
The works for the competition can be delivered personally or by post to the address of the: State Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of Croatia, Ulica grada Vukovara 78, 10 000 Zagreb, or to the email address akademija@dziv.hr with a reference: For the “Innovation for a Better Life” competition. Fine art works and cartoons can be delivered exclusively physically (personally or by post), i.e. they cannot be submitted by email.
The works shall not be returned.
