New Edition of the Newsletter of the EU Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights Published

Let us inform you that the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights (hereinafter: the EU Observatory), which is acting at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), published a new edition of “The Observatory Newsletter” (June, 2016).

The cover story of this issue of the newsletter provides the global overview of negative effects of counterfeit goods in international trade, based on the results of the study “Trade in Counterfeit and Pirated Goods – Mapping the Economic Impact”, showing that international trade in counterfeit and pirated products reached the amount of €338 billion or 2.5% of world trade in total in 2013. In addition, the newsletter shows the results of other studies published during the last three months, such as “Intellectual Property and Youth”, “Intellectual Property and Small and Medium Enterprises” and the seventh study in the sequence of economic studies showing the results of research on negative effects of piracy in the sector of music. The publishing of these studies and the most important conclusions ensuing therefrom have been reported to the interested public on these internet pages as well.

Furthermore, there is the news published in the newsletter on the meeting of countries participating in the pilot project regarding forming a European Aggregator of Legal Offers. The aim of the project is to build a single portal which enables consumers to identify spots or internet sites where to buy legal contents from the world of music, films, computer games, books, TV and sports events for all the European Union.

Also, there is the news published on the IPR Enforcement Conference that took place in Brussels in June 2016, with the theme being “follow the money” approach to IPR infringements as well as possible amendments to the EU Directive on the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights.

The newsletter provides also an overview of other professional education activities held in the last period and elaborates on other topics related to the intellectual property rights enforcement.
